About…

A paranoid schizophrenic with a self-assigned mission to capture New York City, Angelo Rizzuto, also known by his chosen name, Anthony Angel, left his apartment every day at 2 PM to capture what he encountered on film. Over the span of the years 1949-1967 he amassed a collection of over 60,000 photographs of people and places throughout the city, intended for a book he planned to write. Alas, the book was never completed, and Angel donated his material to the Library of Congress.

As a photographer, I’ve become fascinated by Angel’s wanderings and candid captures of the people and places he observed. As a researcher, I often wonder what was going on in Angel’s mind while he documented his world. He was curious, daring, at times a voyeur, but definitely an outsider. I’ve begun my own journey to photograph my observations daily with the ubiquitous cell phone camera, imitating Angel’s style and methods, thus channeling my own inner “Angel”…
